record - which formats supported by which codecs?

The documentation for RecordFormat says:

> Not all sound file formats are compatible with all supported codecs.

Does anyone know which codecs are supported by which file formats?

I am experimenting with Recording trying to find a setting that  
actually works without producing distorted files.
