Delete Resource Fork

I'm looking at page 19 of my new Metacard User's Guide.  From that 
it looks like you can make it empty with this:

put empty into URL "resfile:<path>"

I have no idea whether this is the same as deleting the resource 
fork.  For that matter, I have no idea what the real effect is.
