Well, part of it is that humans are bad at estimating. For my part, I
tend to be overly optimistic, and I've found that a real-world guess
is 2.5 to 3 times what I think. Breaking a project down into smaller
atomic parts means that you can make more reasonable sizing guesses on
them, and that is reflected in the overall project size. And being
able to tweak the individual parts in real time gives you a good sense
of how the project is progressing.
