This is odd.  On OS X here, when using the message box:

  put shell("ipconfig getifaddr en0")

I get "1" in the message box.  When I enter the following:

  answer shell("ipconfig getifaddr en0")

I get "get if addr en0 failed, (os/kern) failure"

???
