Hi Jim,
Try the following instead of merely 'lock screen' :
--
  lock screen
  lock messages
  lock recent
  -- now do your stuff
  ...
  -- and when you're done
  unlock recent
  unlock messages
  unlock screen
--
Locking the mesages will prevent the usual array of
events (closecard, preopencard, opencard) from being
sent ; thus preventing the geometry manager from doing
its 'thing' which invloves unlocking the screen :-)
