state of a checkbox

How can I determine whether or not a checkbox button
is checked?  The documentation is not quite clear.  I
can easily catch a mouseUp when it's clicked on, but
that still doesn't let me determine whether or not
it's checked.  Plus, if the checkbox has the keyboard
focus, you can check it by pressing the spacebar,
which is entirely different.

I'm probably missing something simple, but I'd
appreciate any guidance.
