Thank you Mark, installing the launcher script to set environment variables has fixed all my issues with non-ascii filenames. The documentation for installing LCS could usefully make a note of these settings. And indeed TextEncode/Decode both work as expected, my musings there were irrelevant.

Do you expect a future version of LCServer will incorporate the changes? IMHO I’d agree option 2 would make things work more transparently for the vast majority of cases. And while you wouldn’t able be able to handle badly encoded filenames within LC, I guess you wouldn't be able to create them either.
