Android Player Object in Background

I have a music playing app that uses the native player object to play music.  When in the background, iOS allows control of the playing song in the Control Center.  This not function this way on Android.  There is a androidStartAudioPlayingInBackground command, but that plays a supplied url, not from the player object.   Does anyone have any insight on this?
