One further comment … when  talking about long text and not using lineOffset I really do mean long. 

Using source text the first 500 KB of Les Miserables, the times for simple Parse 1 offset search with skip for *both* raw text and utf-8 was 1 ms, and for lineOffset 10 ms and 14 ms respectively, not worth worrying about doing anything fancy.
