mouseColor randomly returning "0,0,0"

For years I've relied on the mouseColor to pick up colors for my 
layouts, but lately I've found something weird:

Most of the time it works, but sometimes it return "0,0,0" over things I 
know aren't black.

For example, this morning it's returning that color of a large block of 
solid light green.

Has anyone else seen oddities with the mousecolor?


Current test environment: LC 9.6dp4, Ubuntu 18.04
