Can anything not running as root even do this?? And if not, is root account enabled? and if so, has the password been changed?

It may not be recoverable, but I'm curious as to how it happened in the first place.

Anything noteworthy in ~/.bash_history, /var/log/auth.log, or /var/log/syslog?

Are those files even remaining?
