Ugly stack filename problem after Save as!

My gut tells me, without objective evidence, that this is somehow 
related to Apple's removal of the Save As feature in Mt Lion, the one 
that requires you to make a duplicate before editing. It was partially 
restored in Mavericks but it still feels like it isn't all there.
