My 15 seconds with 6.5-RC1 (no edit group)

All the stuff you've posted in this thread works for me, so I haven't
followed too closely, but I just tried your latest. While I don't have
any problems editing groups or subgroups (I normally have the toolbar
hidden as well but enabled it for this test) I did discover one
anomaly and I'll file a bug report on it: if you are editing a group
and attempt to paste objects from the clipboard, edit mode is first
disabled, so that your objects get pasted outside the group.
