Sandboxing is a way of restricting what an app can do ("keep it in its 
sandbox") to prevent it from possibly harming other apps, user data, or 
the system.

While Apple still allows apps to be distributed outside of the Mac app 
store, and indeed most of the bigger publishers do, for those who want 
to distribute through the MAS sandboxing is a requirement.
