Perhaps it's changed since you last used it.

I leave it open all the time, use it constantly, and aside from the 
occasional refresh problem I don't have any trouble with it. It's the 
easiest way to navigate and I can edit scripts and properties of any 
object in any open stack without going to the card. I couldn't work 
without it.
