Well . . . I must be the luckiest chap alive . . . :)

I started a new stack and popped a popup menu on it;

double-clicked on the thing to get its pref palette and set the font and 
the textSize via
the 'Text Formatting' department.

and doing the same via code:

set the textSize of btn "POPOUT" to 72

worked as well.
