getting the user's (internet, not local network) IP address

That is the local IP. I think he wants to know what the IP is on the public side of the gateway. 

I think there are many sites that will return what IP you are connecting from. One of them is http://www.whatismyip.com. Not sure how to parse that out from the html that is returned. I'd have to see what form it takes. Once you have that you can simply use the web plugin to get the html from that url.
