App on Linux - really slow... any ideas why?

Wow... that's really hard to hear...

I've chimed in on a couple of the reports at the RQCC... I *really* need to
come up with a solution; was 2.6.1 (the last version for Linux before 3.0 I
believe) faster/usable?
