Well, to be pedantic, "parentheses" refers to any kind of brackets,  
while "brackets" usually means round brackets for Brits and square  
brackets for North Americans. So for clarity it's probably best to  
use "round brackets" ( ), "square brackets" [ ], "curly brackets" { }  
and "angle brackets" < >, or one of the many descriptive variations  
of these.
