XP: Make checkbox same color as background

I was trying over the weekend to make a checkbox in XP transparent so
that the box part of the checkbox would be the same color as the
background, but that didn't work.

Do we have a way to make a checkbox the same color as the background?
Turning off opaque doesn't work, and setting the color to match the
background only changes the part of the control that does not include
the checkbox, which remains white.
