zero-width column boundaries?

I think we're looking at different problems.

My field has text like this:

   Lots of plain body text.  Lots of plain body text.  Lots
   of plain body text.  Lots of plain body text.  Lots of
   plain body text.  Lots of plain body text.

   Table Data      Table Data      Table Data
   Table Data      Table Data      Table Data
   Table Data      Table Data      Table Data

   Lots of plain body text.  Lots of plain body text.  Lots
   of plain body text.  Lots of plain body text.  Lots of
   plain body text.  Lots of plain body text.


If I have the grid lines visible at all, they'll show across the blocks 
of body text in the field.
