Thousands Separator on OSX

My brain is hurting try to get the current thousands separator on a  
Mac OS.


I have tried
  put replaceText(shell("defaults read NSGlobalDomain  
NSThousandsSeparator"),"(\s|\(|\))","") into gThousandsSeparator

but nothing.

OS X 10.4.5

Any help much appreciated.
