I don't think you have anything to apologize for. You told the truth. 
Basically you said it was illegal but Apple wouldn't know if a copy was 
given to a friend. I don't see anything wrong with that.

The extrapolation of your advice by someone else isn't your 
responsibility. He took it too far.
