relayering groups within groups

Hi Jonathon - I've just done a dummy run with about 50 objects and it 
takes about 40-50 millisecs on my not especially fast OSX box (inside 
the development environment) - I think I can live with that.

If I come up with a better solution I'll be sure to let you know.
