Mark, Bernard Many thanks for taking the time to try this out. Oddly, your solutions work fine in the context discussed. The failure seems to be being caused (for no clearly obvious reason to me) by the nature of the entire script. How this can be I am not yet sure on, but I will let you know when I have it licked.
