OS delimiter question

from http://www.osxfaq.com/tips/unix-tricks/ it seems it should be slash
for shells... shouldn't it?
Is there a translation at some point by runrev or a terminal mode that
forces the translation maybe...
I suppose Applescripts use the ":"...
