Shell command doesn't give feedback until done

I am aware of this, but didn't put it as well in my description.  I 
think that is probably what Bill wants.

Do you know how to do that in OS X?  I tried some variations on shell 
punctuation, but that didn't work for me.

I don't understand what you mean by this.
