Stand Alone Console Applications

Now you have peeked my interest!  Does this mean it is possible?  Is there a precedent? Has someone developed a method that works consistently?  I ask bacause I would like execute many of my utilities under *NIX CRON were ‘X’ is not available and allow the user/administrator (via the same standalone) run it in GUI mode if necessary.  I believe I would not be the only *NIX developer interested.
