Success at last!

Setting LSBackgroundOnly to 1 in the pList...

<key>LSBackgroundOnly</key>
<string>1</string>

...and either 'touching' using the terminal it OR dragging the 
application out of and back into its folder seems to do the trick on 
both 10.2 and 10.3.

Many thanks to Brian and Ken for their help on this one.

Now if anyone knows how to extract image data from .ics files...?
