Ah, I was wondering when someone would get to saying something like 
this.... ;-)

I am reminded of the following passage from The Gift Outright by Robert 
Frost:

"Such as we were, we gave ourselves outright
To the land still vaguely realizing westward
Yet unstoried, artless, unenhanced--
Such as she was, such as she would become."
