Brain-teaser: OCR in RR

We need to do a ³small² project which involves reading a bunch of tiff
files, analyze a small part of it and rename the file according to the
result of the analysis...
The part to analyze is fixed (right top corner) and the data we can expect
is a code-39 barcode.

Before I start testing, trying, coding, sweating and kicking: is there
anybody who could give me a head start on this... (Chipp, you are doing a
lot of image-manipulation...)
I would some appreciate any assistance on how to read the value of a pixel
(on or off) and how to count pixels (go to the part where the barcode is).
I know there is a part on imagedata in the manual, but any hint or advise
would be more then welcome, from anybody...
