General deployment question

How are others dealing with building standalones for the Mac and the 
requirement for unique File Type and Creator? Every application should 
have a unique ID but how do people manage it? Is Apple really very open 
to tracking small-timers like me or is there a better way?

Is there a similar issue for Windows distribution?

Obviously, there would not be a problem with a major distribution and 
registering with Apple.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
