Best way to do palettes?

   OK.  Now, how do I toggle a palette?  I can open and close the stack 
at will from the message box, but how do I tell if it's open?  Also, if 
I "set visible of stack "Palette" to false", the 'palette' command no 
longer works.  Is this supposed to happen? (If I close a palette stack - 
manually or with the close command', the visible also still remains true)
