properties closing too soon

when attempting to write something in an objects
properties stack, like a name or icon number, the
little stack goes blank when i press a letter
key.

i thought it might be something i was not setting
up, and re-took the tutorials, but i can't figure
out why this happens.

also the icons i imported (with numbers in the
3000 & 4000 range) do not appear with the icons
MC provides. how do i edit them?
