Handling a system shutdown

You could try trapping for the "quit" appleevent (which I think is
"aevtquit" or "reqdquit"), as in:

on appleEvent pClass,pID
  if pClass & pID = "aevtquit" then
    -- your code here
  else
    pass appleEvent
  end if
end appleEvent
