Using LiveCode engine with a browser extension (Chrome/Safari/Edge/Firefox)?

I thought browser extensions were limited to HTML/CSS/JS, no?

How does one hook a separate executable into a browser extension?

I've had good luck with limited actions from the browser using URL 
schemes in the Mac plist and Windows registry, but I'm not familiar with 
any deeper integration options.
