can enter a field, but text beeps

I have a field that I can click into, but typing causes a beep instead of
text.

I even added the handler

*on* keyUp ky

   ck ky & cr & the long name of the target

   *pass* keyUp

*end* keyUp


which confirms that the key is indeed triggering in the correct field.  I
put a red dot on the pass, and it doesn't step anywhere (and still doesn't
give me a character in the field).
