Years ago I had to do this kind of scaling with a physical  audio fader on
a digital control surface. For some reason that escapes me for the moment,
I wanted to simulate a log taper with a linear fader feeding an 8 bit A-D
converter rather than using log taper controls, so I made a lookup table in
code.
