Now I failed English, but I think his reaction is because your wrote:

When I type that into Google the hits I get are not positive at all but
negative. Of course you put 'very' in front of that phrase so seems at
least to me to be almost contentious. English is a very weird language and
I've been caught out a couple of times on this List thinking I've written
something OK, if not amusing, only to discover it's offensive to some one
in some other country in some other circumstance. I try to learn but I'm
sure to make other faux pas.

I'm sure you meant it bought a smile to your face, but I hope you can also
see that the whole phrase has other connotations, and can mean quite the
opposite to others.
