Embeded LiveCode -- a distant dream that is dead???

Probably, but embedded systems are often for small markets.

I'm not sure what it would take to make the current engine available in 
an embeddable wrapper, or even if the storage and RAM requirements fit 
within the constraints of such a small device, but it might be worth 
sending an email to support AT livecode.com outlining the use-case you 
describe above to learn more about the possibility of an embedded option 
for that.
