There are several types of BUTTON, and a CHECKBOX is a type of BUTTON.

Anything simpler than that and the pupils/students may feel you are 
insulting their intelligence.

Which, by-ther-way, may be what all the dumbing-down may result in: a 
large number of learners alienated by the over-simplification offending
