Whilst backward compatibility is great, there are always gotchas. And this
doesn't just apply to commercials hardware/software etc, that seem to plan
obsolescence; I have a couple of perfectly serviceable Ethernet 'toys'
which are 10Base-T, attach these to my gigabit network and everything slows
to a crawl.
