names of other machines on local netwrok.

I've been using this from two different macs on the same network, but now
that I've built for  windows, I get the message "unable to to open
servername.local  Cannot translate address."  I had to use the ip address.


A machine named "fred" can be accessed as "fred.local" on unix, including
mac.  This isn't working under windows.  Is it just "fred", or somehting
else?
