Need advice on MacOS standalones and externals

Thanks. Since the latest Xcode doesn't seem to include the PPC compiler,
I'm sticking to Intel.

But I'm still not sure if the bit width matters. On my MacOS 10.8 system,
which I believe is a 64-bit OS, compiling my external as 32-bit works
fine, but is that always the case?
