set the dgData puts grey boxes over my first column

That's sort of what's happening, except I'm  not doing anything to do
it, and the array elements aren't empty.

the array is

part A, part B, part C, part D
alpha, beta, gamma, delta

but the dg shows

<grey mask>, part B, part C, part D
<grey mask>, beta, gamma, delta

I've added no code; I just set the dgdata
