Newbie -- files are not showing on my WIN Vista desktop

I REALLY cannot STAND when OS vendors try to "fix" things for us using techniques like this. Either let me do what I want, or tell me that for security purposes I am not allowed to do that. But don't save a file in a location other than the one I chose! GAWD who thought THAT was a good idea??
