Anyway your reply (which I haven't quoted in full) shows me how to get round my specific issues, so I see that it can be done: what I have to do now is to decide between a perhaps more appropriate structure using arrays, with the disadvantage of having to put them in a stack and save it to get persistence, or to put up with the rather clunky XML functions (yours or LC's) in order to get a simpler storage solution.

If it's *really* simple, you might want to consider a simple tab-delimited text file - by far the easiest approach, IMHO.
