critical socket error

More last minute network woes! I'm now having problems connecting to a particular server from an app but not from the IDE. From the app the connection info looks like this...

...nothing is returned and the socket doesn't appear to close. However, from the IDE I get this...

...and the socket closes after a bit.

Now, it's a secure connection and I've got the 'SSL and Encryption' library selected in the standalone builder. I've also included a .pem file with the necessary certificates (I know this works because I'm connecting to another secure server on a different subdomain - cc.medicine.unimelb.edu.au rather than cats.medicine.unimelb.edu.au - actually I think both of these subdomains are hosted on the same server).

Any ideas on where I might be going wrong?
