Drag and drop filetype

Hi, all. I've got a very basic question. After a file is drag-and-dropped,
how can I determine WHAT the dropped item is referring to, e.g., a FOLDER or
a FILE, and if a file, RELIABLY, what KIND of file (e.g., a doc or a wav)?
There are a few old notes discussing this on the listserv, but since
Livecode is constantly improving, I'm wondering where this stands now. I
want to have a single application, by the way, that will run on EITHER Mac
OSX or Windows XP-to-7. Thanks.
