Is the mySQL database set up to allow access from the device? I believe you need to set the remote client IP address for mySQL installs, for security reasons - if it's a typical virtual host install, it'll probably be set to allow access from your desktop machine (the machine you most likely used to set up the database...) but not other IP addresses...
